Open-Air Hot Spring with Swans? - Absolutely Unique Local Onsen in Hokkaido

Natural hot spring is what attracts many people to Hokkaido. Among 245 spots in Hokkaido, I believe Kotan hot spring in Teshikaga town has a significant uniqueness, nothing like others — you can enjoy the hot spring right in front of Lake Kussharo with swans!

This hot spring is managed by a local community. The bathtub is partially divided for men and women with a rock as you can see in the picture. You are allowed to wear swimsuits or bring in a towel here, unlike other hot springs in Japan. And it’s for free!

It is too bad that I don’t have a picture of both the hot spring and swans, but you will see them swimming in the lake from late October to April. They migrate from Siberia to spend winter here every year.
