Akan is a cozy onsen (hot spring) town sitting right next to Lake Akan with great nature around it. Most of the hotels offer natural onsen with beautiful lake views. As Akan has one of the biggest Ainu communities (the indigenous people in Hokkaido), it’s a perfect place to learn about the Ainu culture.

  • How to Get There

One hour by rental car or bus from Kushiro Airport and JR Kushiro Station. There is also a one-hour bus from JR Kitami Station.

  • Best time to visit

Akan has its charm in each season. Summer (June to September) would be best to enjoy outdoor activities. Beautiful autumn colors are at their peak from late September to early October. Fun winter activities on the frozen lake will be available between January and March.
