Eastern Hokkaido Trips
5-Day Eastern Hokkaido Road Trip Itinerary: Shiretoko, Akan, Lake Kussharo
If you want to explore Hokkaido beyond the usual tourist routes, this 5-day self-drive itinerary in Eastern Hokkaido is perfect. Starting at Memanbetsu Airport and ending in Kushiro, it takes you through three national parks in Shiretoko, Akan-Mashu, and Kushiro Shitsugen.
I highly recommend this itinerary for travelers who love nature and want to see the rural areas of Hokkaido. And I want you to visit Eastern Hokkaido, my home region where I grew up!

6-Day Eastern Hokkaido Itinerary: Kushiro, Akan, Notsuke Peninsula
This 6-day Eastern Hokkaido road trip is one of my favorite hidden-gem itineraries. You’ll start in Kushiro and explore scenic wetlands, quiet fishing towns, and coastal drives along the way to Notsuke Peninsula, Japan’s longest sandspit with truly otherworldly landscapes.
I created this trip in collaboration with my friend Akinori, a local guesthouse owner near Notsuke Peninsula, to make sure it’s full of local tips. If you’re curious about places most tourists skip, and love peaceful drives and raw nature, I think you’ll love this route!

3-Day Summer Shiretoko Itinerary
Looking for a nature-filled destination in Hokkaido? This 3-day Shiretoko itinerary is packed with outdoor activities and hot spring stays in one of Japan’s most untouched coastlines.
You’ll explore Shiretoko National Park’s forests, waterfalls, and lakes, and maybe even spot wild bears or dolphins on a wildlife cruise. It’s a great pick for outdoor lovers who want to experience the wild side of Hokkaido.

3-Day Summer Akan Itinerary
If you’re looking for a relaxing summer getaway with hot springs, lake views, and a touch of the Ainu culture (Hokkaido’s indigenous people), this 3-day Akan itinerary is for you.
You’ll enjoy ferry rides, forest walks, and cozy stays in one of Eastern Hokkaido’s most charming onsen towns. The onsen town in Akan is compact and walkable, so you don’t need a car to get around.

3-Day Abashiri Summer Itinerary
If you’re planning a summer trip without a car, this 3-day Abashiri itinerary is a great place to start. Abashiri is one of the easiest destinations to explore by public transportation in Eastern Hokkaido. And still it offers a great mix of nature, history, and relaxing hot springs!
In this itinerary, you’ll visit local highlights like the Abashiri Prison Museum, a flower park, and a nature reserve. Abashiri is also a family-friendly destination!

1-Day Lake Kussharo & Lake Mashu Itinerary
This is a great day trip to plug into your Eastern Hokkaido itinerary! You’ll visit a scenic viewpoint of Lake Kussharo, walk through a forested peninsula, dip your feet in natural hot springs, and end the day at Japan’s clearest lake, Lake Mashu. I love this area so much because you’ll get to see so many nature spots in one day!

Northern Hokkaido
3-Day Itinerary for Furano, Biei, and Asahikawa
Want to see Hokkaido’s classic summer views like flower fields and dairy farms? Then this 3-day itinerary for Furano, Biei, and Asahikawa is perfect for first-timers who want an easy, scenic route with just enough time in each spot.
This itinerary was created with my friend who’s a Furano local, and she shared with us her favorite spots in the area. It also covers famous photo spots like the Blue Pond and Farm Tomita that you already might want to check out.

Winter itineraries
Winter in Hokkaido is magical. We have drift ice on the sea, frozen lakes, snow-covered forests… and my favorite part of winter Hokkaido is diving into onsen after a day-long winter activities!!
I’ve helped many travelers explore this region in winter over the years, and one thing I always tell them is, I don’t recommend driving in winter (unless you’re already used to icy roads). The conditions can be tricky, and your safety matters most. That’s why all my winter itineraries can be followed by public transportation!
10-Day Hokkaido Winter Itinerary

It’s my most detailed route, designed entirely with trains and buses so you can relax and enjoy the journey without worrying about icy roads.
