Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel with Kids: Honest Family Stay Review
Looking for an onsen hotel in Shiretoko, Hokkaido where you can relax even with kids?
Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel is one of the most family-friendly places I’ve stayed at in Shiretoko. It’s a mid-range onsen hotel that has kid-friendly facilities, great food, and beautiful ocean views.
Hi, I’m Yuuka! I’m from Eastern Hokkaido, and Shiretoko is my family’s go-to weekend getaway destination. In the summer of 2025, I stayed at Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel with my family, including my 1-year-old son and my 4-year-old niece, and it was the best choice!
I’m sharing my honest review of what I really appreciated about this hotel as a parent and a few things you should know before booking, so you can decide if this is a good fit for your trip.

Very Family-Friendly Facilities
This is why all the families with young kids should stay at Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel.
What I really appreciated as soon as we entered the hotel is that they have a toy corner, a small children’s library space, and some cute hats for photos right in the lobby area.
We stayed during peak season in mid-August, so check-in took some time. But our kids didn’t care because they just played there! If you are a parent, you know how important this is…
There’s also a game area close to the onsen entrance.
But the biggest highlight is… the indoor heated pool!
When we stayed, my son and niece both absolutely loved it. It’s warm, shallow (around 30 cm deep and up), and perfect for kids to burn energy.
The official website says the pool is for 3 years old and up, but to be honest, we didn’t know about it and the pool was totally fine for my 1.5-year-old. That said, please use your own judgment and always supervise your children.
It’s free for hotel guests and open from 12 pm to 9 pm all year round. Yes, winter too! You can also rent swimwear and floating rings at the reception, which makes packing much easier.

Rooms: Ocean Views & Flexible Options for Families
Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel offers a wide range of room types, so it’s easy to find something that fits your travel style, whether you’re visiting as a couple or a family.
They have Japanese-style rooms with tatami flooring and futon mattresses, and Western-style rooms with beds, for up to 8 people depending on the room type.
Because the hotel sits on a hill, many rooms come with open views of the Sea of Okhotsk. The sunsets are especially beautiful here. If you’re visiting in winter, you’ll even see the famous drift ice!
If you want to have an ocean view for sure, I recommend choosing a room in the West Wing.
We stayed in a Japanese-style room with tatami flooring and futon mattresses, and it was honestly perfect for traveling with a toddler.
The hotel doesn’t provide baby cribs, so sleeping on futons on the floor felt much safer for my son than a raised bed with me.
Another thing I really liked is that Japanese-style rooms give you more open floor space, which made it easier for him to crawl, play, and move around.
If you’re traveling with young kids and want a simple, comfortable setup, a Japanese-style room is a great option.

Dinner & Breakfast Buffet: Huge Variety & Local Food
Both dinner and breakfast are served buffet-style.
For dinner especially, I was really impressed by how wide the variety is. There were Japanese, Chinese and Western-style dishes, and of course, lots of seafood!
One thing I really respect is that the hotel partners with local fishermen and uses fish that might otherwise go unused. During our stay, I saw them turned into dishes like tempura and stir-fries. It’s a great way for the hotel to support the local fishing industry while also reducing food waste.
They also serve some Ainu dishes (the Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido), including traditional soups and seafood-based dishes. This is something you rarely see at hotel buffets, and I loved that they weren’t just offering generic, popular food, but actually sharing local culture and cuisine.
If you’re traveling with kids, there’s also a children’s food corner with things like chicken nuggets and French fries, so little ones can easily find something they enjoy.
The breakfast buffet is also generous, with a good mix of Japanese and Western dishes, as well as seafood options. You’ll be full of energy before heading out to explore Shiretoko!

Onsen: Spacious & Baby-Friendly
Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel has large onsen facilities, and they feel very much like a classic resort-style hot spring.
The indoor bathing areas are spacious, so it never felt too crowded when we visited. I went to the onsen with my son, my sister and her daughter, and it felt quite comfortable even with young kids.
The outdoor onsen isn’t very big, but it has a good ocean view.
What I really appreciated as a parent is that they also have a lukewarm bath designed for small children, so little ones can enjoy the onsen more safely and comfortably.
In the changing rooms, there are also diaper bins and baby beds so you can put your baby there while you change. These make a big difference when you’re with little ones!

Location: On a Hill with Ocean Views
Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel is located on a hill, a little above the central Utoro town where you’ll a few restaurants, convenience stores, cafes and souvenir shops.
If you’re traveling by car, the hotel offers free on-site parking. From the hotel, it’s about a 10-minute drive to the Shiretoko National Park Nature Center and around 20 minutes to the Shiretoko Five Lakes trail, one of the most popular spots at the National Park.

If you’re using public transportation, the hotel is about a 20-minute walk from Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal. The hotel also provides a shuttle bus upon request, which is very helpful if you’re traveling with luggage.

Big Crowds During Peak Season
We stayed in mid-August, which is summer holiday season in Japan and one of the busiest periods of the year in Shiretoko.
Because Shiretoko Daiichi is a large resort hotel, it was very busy during our stay. The biggest downside for us was the long lines at the buffet, both at dinner and breakfast.
Another very busy season in Shiretoko is February, during the drift ice period.
If you’re traveling during these peak seasons, I recommend going in with the expectation of a lively, bustling vibe, rather than a quiet, calm onsen stay.
That said, we still enjoyed our family stay! I just wanted to share my honest thoughts so you know what to expect.
