One-Day Family Trip to Onneyu, Hokkaido: Local’s Guide
Planning a family trip in Eastern Hokkaido with young kids? And want something fun but easy? This one-day itinerary in Onneyu is exactly what you need!
As a mom of a toddler myself, I know the hassles of traveling with little ones. That’s why I love recommending this spot to families because you can spend an entire day in one location without juggling naps, bored kids, or multiple drives.
Once you get there, everything is walkable in one location.
From a local aquarium to a fun playroom packed with wooden toys that are perfect for your little ones, Onneyu makes a stress-free trip that your kids (and you!) will enjoy.
In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to plan your trip, plus tips on where to grab snacks, pick up local souvenirs, and keep the whole family happy.
How to get to Onneyu
Onneyu is a small onsen town, and our destination of the day is Roadside Station Onneyu (Google Maps).
It’s about 40 mins by car from Kitami and 1.5 hours from Abashiri. If you prefer public transportation, you can take a bus from JR Kitami Station about 1 hour.
Onneyu One-Day Itinerary Overview (At a Glance)
Here’s a quick snapshot of how you can spend a day in Onneyu:
- Aquarium: Check out unique exhibits at a local aquarium, Kitano Daichi no Aquarium (about 1 hour).
- Souvenirs & Snack: Go to the souvenir shop and try Shirohana Mame soft-serve ice cream (30 minutes).
- Playtime: Visit the Wooden Toy Playroom for fun, hands-on play (30 minutes).
- Lunch: Enjoy a ramen lunch at the nearby restaurant by the parking area (about 1 hour).
- Onsen: Recharge at a drop-inn onsenbefore heading back!
Kitano Daichi no Aquarium
We will start the day at Kitano Daichi no Aquarium, a small but fascinating spot that showcases Hokkaido’s freshwater life.
As soon as entering the gate, you will be welcomed by a floor-to-ceiling glass fish tank where you can see how fish swim in a strong current under a waterfall.
Next to it is a big window to an artificial river situated outside. You can observe the world under a frozen river if you visit here in winter. The exhibits nicely showcase the natural habitat of aquatic life in the region.
This aquarium is also famous for housing 20 Ito fish, the largest freshwater fish in Japan—nowhere else can you see so many in one place!

Wooden Toy Playroom
Right next to the aquarium is a charming wooden toy playroom, an perfect stop for toddlers and young kids to burn off energy.
The room is filled with handcrafted wooden toys, including a jungle gym, slides, a ball pool, ride-on animals, and even a fishing pond.
There’s also a reading corner with picture books for quieter play. It’s cozy, well-kept, and perfect for kids of all ages.
As a bonus, parents can relax nearby while watching their children explore freely in a safe environment.

Souvenir Shopping & Local Treats
Next, make a stop at the souvenir shop inside the same building as the playroom. It’s a great place to pick up unique local products, from snacks to skincare goods.
One of my top recommendations is Japanese mint oil from Kitami, my hometown. You’ll find sprays, bath oils, toothpicks, and candies all made with this refreshing local ingredient.
And don’t miss the soft-serve ice cream made from Shirohana Mame, a locally grown white runner bean. It has a delicate, slightly nutty flavor and costs just 350 yen per cone. A fun treat for both kids and grown-ups!
Ramen for Lunch
When it’s time for lunch, head to the restaurant right next to the parking area. It’s more like a cozy local diner than just a ramen shop, offering a variety of dishes, like soba, udon, rice bowls, and tasty side dishes.
Here are a few menu highlights:
- Jingisukan Ramen (grilled lamb topping) – 900 JPY
- Vegetable Ramen with Salt Broth – 800 JPY
- Tempura Soba – 700 JPY
- Fried Potato Skewer (Age-imo) – 250 JPY
It’s affordable, casual, and quick. Ideal when traveling with hungry little ones!
Onsen stop at Oe Honke
Let’s finish up the day with a nice onsen dip! Onneyu Onsen has over 100 years of history, and Oe Honke has one of the most traditional natural onsen baths in the town. They are an onsen hotel, but offer a day-use onsen as blow.

- Admission: 1,500 JPY per adult, 700 JPY per child
